Zach’s inspiring limerick: AVODAH through rhyme

Zach Elkin wrote this creative limerick and read it at the Journeys Toward Social Justice event on Sunday. If you want to let him know your thoughts, you can email him at zachary.elkin@gmail.com

AVODAH through rhyme

There once was a bunch of nice Jews

With so many talents to use

They all had cool jobs

Refused to be snobs

But on weekends needed to snooze

These Jews were committed to justice

They stayed strong and fierce like Augustus

And when they arrived home

They were greeted “Shalom”

And if lucky enough got a kiss

But seriously, what a group

Thrown into DC with one swoop

To help those with less

And clean up this mess

They stood tall, proud, refused to droop

They built a Jewish community

A rare and fun opportunity

Together they ate

And cleaned up their plates

Outsiders could sense their unity

I am one of brave sixteen

To live on our budget cuisine

The road has been fun

And we’re almost done

A more special group I’ve not seen

Tonight is a time to embrace

All the great people in this place

They’ve done all they could

To make this world good

And they’ve done it with style and grace

AVODAH is just the beginning

To the battles that we’ll be winning

It will not be easy

At times well be queasy

But people we help are grinning
